Sparrow Class
Sparrow Class is one of the four Early Years classes, which has eight children of both nursery and reception age.
The children follow the Early Years Foundation stage curriculum which is modified to meet their needs. The curriculum is planned jointly with input from the speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists as appropriate.
Sparrow class is a specialist class for children with ASD and additional significant learning difficulties. The children are offered a mixture of adult lead structured play, where they are encourged to make choices about what they would like to do. Additionally they have individual work where the children focus on maths and English activities. There are regular opportunities for individual work focusing on their personal therapy targets. The speech and language therapist also spends time in class to advise other staff on objectives to work on with the children in class on a daily basis. The children also have specific lessons to develop their listening and attention and their social skills.
The early years have two outdoor areas. One is specifically for curriculum use and is used for planned activities and child initiated play. It is partially covered so that children can be outside whatever the weather! The other is used primarily for lunchtime play and has a range of equipment designed to encourage gross motor development and shared play.
