Wagtail Class is one of the three Early Years classes. Wagtail is a class of seven children ranging from 2 to 5 years of age who experience a range of moderate to severe learning difficulties, often with an additional physical disability. Some of the children use wheelchairs, standing frames and walkers. The children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which is modified to meet their needs. The curriculum is planned jointly and with input from the Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists as appropriate.
The children are offered a mixture of adult-led structured play and child-initiated play, where they are encouraged to make choices about what they would like to do. Additionally they have Paired Work sessions where early Literacy and Numeracy is taught. Children also have regular opportunities to work on their Speech and Language Therapy programmes.
We have a large outdoor area which is used for child-initiated and adult-led play and has a range of equipment designed to encourage gross motor development, imaginative play and social skills.
Wagtail class swim once a week and we also have sessions in the school library and soft play room. We have PE in the school hall each week where we learn to follow instructions, crawl, walk, run, climb, balance and develop our throwing and catching skills. Some children also go to Stocklake Park school for Rebound sessions on the trampoline.
